Ghost Gear

More than 12 million tons of plastic end up in our seas every year. Plastic pollution plagues every corner of the ocean and despite growing awareness, the problem is only getting worse. Ghost fishing gear includes any abandoned, lost, or otherwise discarded fishing gear, much of which often goes unseen. This gear is the deadliest form of marine plastic as it unselectively catches wildlife, entangling marine mammals, seabirds, sea turtles, and sharks, subjecting them to a slow and painful death through exhaustion and suffocation, it also damages critical marine habitats such as coral reefs. Unlike other forms of marine pollution debris, fishing gear is specifically designed to catch marine life, derelict gear can continue to catch and kill wildlife for years.

Fishing gear accounts for roughly 10% of ocean pollution debris: between 500,000 to 1 million tons of fishing gear are discarded or lost in the ocean every year (55.000 school buses). Discarded nets, lines, and ropes now make up about 46% of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.

Needless to say, we are torturing and killing all marine wildlife in the cruelest and most ignorant way.

OBJECT 2 is designed to bring awareness to the cruelty and pollution by the fishing industry. The shapes of the object refer to the fishing net floats which drift around the oceans with ghost nets attached to them capturing and killing any animal that comes too close to it or washes up on the beaches where the UV light breaks it apart and it enters the ocean as toxic micro plastics.

In collaboration with OPO-Lab we created this 3-D printed object, the material is PLA which is a type of polyester made from corn - so it is plant based. OPO-Lab is a manufacturer finding innovative solutions and methods of recycling plastics and creating new objects with recycled materials or alternative materials.

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society actively fights against the illegal fishing industry and their reckless ocean pollution.

OBJECT 2 it can be used as a planting pot, store spices, jewellery, candy or anything you want to put in it.
